PREREQUISITE: Completion of Introduction to Medical Education Principles (SOMN 626)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This course explores the principles and practices of assessment and mentoring in medical
education. Students will discuss various assessment methods, develop assessment tools,
evaluate tutoring technologies, understand the importance of feedback, and describe
effective mentoring characteristics.
Course Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the benefits and limitations of various assessment methods and best use of these (PBL-1)
- Develop at least 2 different assessment tools which can be applied in the medical education setting (PBL-1)
- Evaluate various tools and technologies that enhance the effectiveness of tutoring sessions (PBL-1, PBL-3)
- Explain the importance of giving and receiving feedback in various learning environments and describe models which can assist facilitators in this process(PBL-3)
- Describe characteristics of good mentoring, including responsibilities of mentees/advisees(PBL-1)
METHODS OF TEACHING:
- Lecture
- Discussion, small group
- Peer teaching
METHODS OF STUDENT EVALUATION/ REQUIREMENTS:
- Attendance at all required sessions, including 3 journal club meetings (monthly)
- Completion of all required assignments
- Participate as AEC Peer Leader, including 60 hours of peer teaching
ELECTIVE EVALUATION: Students will be given the opportunity to evaluate their experience and make recommendations to the director, coordinator, and teaching faculty.
